The IB Visual Arts program is structured to provide discipuli with a three-step process to examine, understand, and creatively express art. In the first step, discipuli will investigate and analyze works of art of artists. Discipuli will gain understanding of how others have succeeded and/or struggled with content and materials. This will provide discipuli with inspiration for their own works of art. In the program, a discipulus will examine and analyze the works of historical and contemporary artists. New York City based institutions, museums and collections, demonstrate not only vast range in historical chronology but also international content. The second step in the Visual Art program will focus on the development of art skills within the class time. A main objective of the Visual Arts program is to help discipuli develop and hone skills of the artist. These skills include such basics of art production as observational drawing, knowledge and manipulation of media, and development of artist statements. The knowledge, practice, and mastery of media provide discipuli the ability and confidence to create final works of art. The final step of knowledge acquisition is the internalizing of information, relating it the self, and creating a work of art. Reflection allows discipuli to relate the newly acquired information to their own abilities and limitations.

Assessments throughout the year include interviews each term in which students present their portfolio and Investigation Workbook.

Discipuli are expected to:
• Produce a portfolio of final works of art
• Present their Studio Work and Investigation Workbook in an interview each term
• Travel to galleries and museum exhibitions outside of class time
• Attend after school studio hours
• Conduct independent research
• Meet project deadlines
• Conduct writing assignments such as an artist’s statement
• Exhibit their Final Studio Artwork and Investigation Workbook
